What is a Dental Infection?

What Are Teeth Made Of?

Our teeth are more than just what we see when we smile. Each tooth has layers:

  • Enamel: This tough outer shell protects the tooth.
  • Dentin: A softer layer beneath the enamel.
  • Pulp: At the center, where nerves and blood vessels are found.

How Do Teeth Get Infected?

Your mouth is home to many bacteria. Most are harmless, but when we don’t brush and floss well, a sticky film called plaque builds up on teeth. Plaque feeds bacteria, making them stronger.

If plaque isn’t removed, it hardens into tartar (or calculus), which is tough to clean off. These bacteria can create cavities (holes) in teeth. If a cavity reaches the pulp, it can lead to an infection.

Types of Dental Infections

Two main types of dental infections include:

  • Cavities: Holes caused by bacterial infection.
  • Abscesses: Pus-filled bumps that form around an infected tooth.

Signs and Symptoms of a Dental Infection

Signs of a dental infection are:

  • Toothache, often throbbing
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods/drinks
  • Swollen gums
  • Redness around gums
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck (for some infections)

What Happens If I Don’t Treat a Dental Infection?

Ignoring a dental infection won’t make it go away. Without treatment, it can spread to the jawbone, face, or even other parts of the body.

Preventing Dental Infections

Prevention is the best medicine for dental infections:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily: Removes plaque and bacteria.
  • Floss once daily: Gets rid of plaque between teeth.
  • Use fluoridated toothpaste: Strengthens teeth against decay.

Fun Fact about Brushing: Did you know the first toothbrush was invented in ancient Egypt? It was made of twigs frayed at the end!

  • Regular dental checkups: Visit your dentist for cleanings and to catch cavities early.

If you notice signs of a dental infection, visit your dentist promptly. Early treatment prevents complications and keeps your smile healthy!
