What is the meaning of Pyogenic Granuloma?
Pyogenic Granuloma is widely used term in Dental Conditions.
Pyogenic granuloma, also known as pregnancy tumor or granuloma gravidarum, is a benign vascular growth that commonly occurs in the oral cavity. Despite the name, it is not associated exclusively with pregnancy and can affect both males and females at any age. It is characterized by a rapidly growing, red or pink, painless or slightly tender lesion that bleeds easily.
Pyogenic granulomas typically arise due to an exaggerated response to minor trauma, hormonal changes, or local irritation. They often occur in areas that are prone to injury, such as the gingiva (gums), tongue, lips, or the lining of the oral cavity. While they appear as raised, soft, and spongy lesions, they are not true granulomas as the name suggests.
These lesions can vary in size, ranging from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter. Although they are usually harmless, they can cause discomfort, interfere with eating, speaking, or oral hygiene practices. In some cases, pyogenic granulomas may spontaneously regress, but they often require professional intervention to remove them surgically or with other treatment modalities such as laser therapy or chemical cauterization.
It is important to consult a dental healthcare professional if you notice any abnormal growth or lesion in your mouth to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
