What is the meaning of Proximal?

Proximal is widely used term in Dental Anatomy.

Proximal in dental anatomy refers to the side or surface of a tooth that is closest to its adjacent tooth. Specifically, it refers to the contact point or area where two neighboring teeth touch each other. The proximal surface refers to the area of the tooth that is not visible when looking at the front (facial) or back (lingual) sides of the teeth. It is present between the teeth and is commonly referred to as the mesial or distal surface, depending on its location in relation to the midline of the dental arch.
