What is the meaning of Osteoradionecrosis?

Osteoradionecrosis is widely used term in Dental Conditions.

Osteoradionecrosis is a dental condition characterized by the death of bone tissue in the jaw that has been previously exposed to radiotherapy. It occurs as a late complication of radiation therapy, usually for the treatment of head and neck cancers. The radiation damages the blood vessels in the jawbone, causing decreased blood flow and oxygen supply to the area. As a result, the bone becomes weakened and more susceptible to infection or injury. Common symptoms of osteoradionecrosis include pain, swelling, difficulty in opening the mouth, exposed bone, and non-healing ulcers or wounds in the mouth. Proper dental management and preventive measures are necessary to minimize the risk of developing osteoradionecrosis in patients who have undergone radiotherapy.
