What is the meaning of Leukoplakia?

Leukoplakia is widely used term in Dental Conditions.

Leukoplakia is a condition characterized by the development of thick, white patches on the mucous membranes inside the mouth. These patches cannot be easily scraped off and can vary in size and shape. Leukoplakia is often associated with tobacco use, particularly smoking, but it can also be caused by other irritants like alcohol or rough teeth and dental appliances. While most cases of leukoplakia are benign, it can sometimes be a precursor to oral cancer. Therefore, it is important to have any suspicious patches evaluated by a dentist to determine the cause and appropriate course of treatment.
