What is the meaning of Abrasion?

Abrasion is widely used term in Dental Miscellaneous Term.

Abrasion, in dental terms, refers to the wearing away or loss of tooth structure caused by friction or mechanical forces other than those associated with tooth decay or trauma. It commonly occurs due to improper brushing techniques, aggressive tooth brushing, using a hard toothbrush, abrasive toothpaste, or excessive force during chewing or grinding. The areas most commonly affected by abrasion are the tooth’s cervical (neck) area and the exposed root surfaces, leading to dental sensitivity and root surface caries. Preventive measures include using a soft-bristled toothbrush, practicing gentle brushing techniques, and addressing any underlying factors that may contribute to the abrasion, such as grinding or clenching teeth.
