What is the meaning of Odontoma?

Odontoma is widely used term in Dental Conditions.

Odontoma is a dental condition that refers to a benign tumor or growth originating from the cells that form teeth. It is the most common odontogenic tumor and can occur in various forms, such as compound odontoma or complex odontoma.

Compound odontomas consist of multiple small, tooth-like structures known as denticles, which are arranged in an organized manner. Complex odontomas, on the other hand, have a more irregular structure and do not resemble normal teeth.

Odontomas are usually discovered during routine dental examinations or during the evaluation of symptoms such as delayed eruption of teeth, pain, or swelling. Although odontomas are not malignant, they can cause complications such as malocclusion, delayed tooth eruption, or displacement of adjacent teeth.

Treatment of odontomas typically involves surgical removal of the tumor, which is usually performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or a qualified dentist. Early detection and intervention are important to prevent potential dental problems and ensure proper oral health.
