What is the meaning of Probing?

Probing is widely used term in Dental Techniques.

Probing, in dental techniques, refers to the procedure of using a dental probe to measure the depth of the spaces between the gums and teeth. It is typically performed as a part of routine dental check-ups or periodontal evaluations to assess the health of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

During the probing process, a calibrated dental probe is gently inserted into the space between the gum tissue and the tooth. The measurements obtained help determine the presence and severity of periodontal disease or gingivitis. The depth of the gum pockets is recorded in millimeters, and deeper pockets may indicate the presence of gum disease.

Probing is an essential part of dental examinations as it allows dentists or hygienists to assess the health of the gums, identify any signs of inflammation or infection, and develop appropriate treatment plans. Regular probing helps diagnose and monitor gum health, enabling early intervention and preventing the progression of periodontal problems.
