What is the meaning of Ankylosis?

Ankylosis is widely used term in Dental Conditions.

Ankylosis refers to a dental condition in which a tooth becomes fused or firmly joined to the surrounding bone, essentially losing its mobility or ability to move within the socket. This occurs when the periodontal ligament, which normally attaches the tooth to the bone, is replaced by bone tissue. As a result, the affected tooth may appear submerged or shorter than neighboring teeth and can lead to various functional and aesthetic problems. Ankylosis can be caused by trauma, infection, or certain genetic factors. Treatment may involve orthodontic intervention or surgical procedures to address the functional and cosmetic concerns associated with ankylosed teeth.
